San Luis Obispo California

Also known as SLO

“Loving The SLO Life.” Spend an afternoon in San Luis Obispo and you’ll see that slogan popping up everywhere—shop windows, bumper-stickers, apparel, billboards. And it won’t take you long at all to discover why the locals have such a big heart for their small town, SLO.

Just three hours south of the Bay Area and equally as far north from Los Angeles, sits San Luis Obispo, a city of less than 50,000 happy people. A small town, it’s easy to breeze past it along Highway 101, but it’d be a mistake to do so. Do yourself the favor of exiting at Marsh Street and explore the downtown and heart of San Luis Obispo—a vibrant array of charming shops and delicious eateries follow the treelined sidewalks. Probably best just to pull over so you don’t miss what makes SLO the happiest place on earth, according to Oprah.

Hop in line for a mouthwatering Tri Tip sandwich at the landmark Firestone Grill, or stroll just past the edge of downtown to grab a savory Gyro plate or Flatbread pizza at the beloved Greek food-stop, Petra. Fancier evening on the menu? You won’t be disappointed by Novo, Flour House, Luna Red, Buona Tavola, Koberl at Blue, Ciopinot, Guiseppe’s (the list goes on).  Don’t make that reservation for a Thursday night though, because you’ll have a hard time peeling yourself away from the excitement and delicious smells of SLO’s Farmer’s Market, where an array of food vendors and food growers, musicians, entertainers and local artisans of all sorts delight the crowds that roam up and down Higuera Street.  With the wealth of fresh, organic produce here, it won’t surprise you that the Farm-to-Table culture is a pretty big deal in San Luis Obispo.

Proud to be the home to a couple dozen fantastic wineries on the periphery of town—scenic Edna Valley—and a close neighbor to the famed Paso Robles wine region, you’ll find no shortage of exquisite, world-class local wines in San Luis Obispo. And beer-lovers will discover a newly flourishing craft beer scene here too.

While downtown, don’t miss Bubblegum Alley, or the Mission of San Luis Obispo, and make sure you steal away for a few minutes of quiet by San Luis Creek, which winds its way along downtown, tucked behind Higuera Street. There’s a youthful vibrancy to San Luis Obispo, but it’s not wholly due to Cal Poly University—notable for its Engineering, Business, and Agriculture programs and located just a mile and a half down the road—It’s the amazing climate paired with the varied terrain which gives its happy residents plenty of reason to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

Forget the treadmill at the gym, runners. You’ll find good community on the street or on the trails. Watch for bicyclists, on-road or off-, or just listen for the \’ding\’ of a mountain biker approaching while you’re hiking any of the myriad trails in the town of the Seven Sisters (or Nine, depending on who you talk to)—the picturesque chain of volcanic peaks leading west to Morro Bay, on the coast.  And oh, the coast… Surfers, stand-up paddle-boarders, kayakers, beach-walkers, and sun-soakers will be right at home in San Luis Obispo, because a fifteen minute drive will take you to any of a dozen beautiful beaches on the Central Coast.

It’s hard to believe that paradise might be hiding in plain sight, smack dab in the middle of California. But just give yourself a day there, and you’ll find yourself loving the SLO life too.
