Austin Texas

Also known as ATX

The first time I took a trip to Austin I was almost instantly enamored. I was 29 years old and came to visit the University of Texas to see if it would be a good fit for graduate school. Aspiring to be a psychologist, I knew the counseling psychology program was considered to be ‘top notch’, and the professor I really wanted to work with was there.

As I drove into the city I thought “Ok, this is interesting.” It seemed a bit smaller than I expected, yet nowhere near as desolate as I assumed. Of course, Nebraska isn’t the most highly populated state in the country, but when I thought of Texas I mainly thought of sand and cacti. Austin is nothing like that.

I quickly noticed a warm and friendly vibe as I began interacting with the locals both on and off campus, and it wasn’t but half of a day before I felt like I was at home. When I mentioned that feeling to the professors I met with, several of them stated, “Yeah, it’s a sticky city.” “A sticky city?” I inquired. “Yes, people come here and they don’t want to leave,” I was told.

Well, that statement has held true for me to this day. I honestly can’t imagine living anywhere else. Growing up on a small lake in Nebraska, I became somewhat of a pro at fishing, water skiing, wakeboarding, and wake surfing, and Austin definitely lends itself to all of that. And that’s just the beginning.

Sure, the traffic has picked up since I arrived in 2006 and the skyline has completely expanded (about 150 people per day move to Austin and tech companies consistently add offices here), but there is so much to see and do that I can never get enough. On any given day there are (or were prior to COVID-19) over 100 venues featuring live music as well as countless spots for amazing food and drinks. You can start your day with a run, bike, kayak or paddle board around Lady Bird Lake or trek any of the city’s great parks and trails, then head to a cool local coffee shop for a wake up and proceed with any work dealings.

Towards the evening you can go online and see all of the restaurant options and available reservations. The number of first-class eateries in Austin has become staggering. Every week I receive announcements about additional restaurants hitting the books. Most of them do not disappoint.

Of course, there is the “Keep Austin Weird” stuff that still exists as well. You can hardly go more than one city block without seeing multiple food trucks, some with lines extending around the block. Anything from Tacos and Tex-Mex to Thai and barbecue. You merely think it and it is here somewhere. An afternoon journey along South Congress Street is also sure to please, as you can peruse all of the eccentric shops, watch street entertainers, and stop for refreshments almost anywhere along the way. The South Congress bridge is host to the bats as well. Yes, the bats. Run a search.

When out-of-town clients ask what there is to do in Austin, I really don’t know where to begin. I haven’t even touched on so many of the wonderful things still high on my list. Three great websites to visit when you’re looking for something new are: Do512.com, Austin360.com, and Austin.CultureMap.com. Austin is also the start of the beautiful Hill Country which is flush with lush landscapes, wineries, breweries and distilleries, all of which are very popular on the weekends.

If I had to sum up the Austin experience in five lines, I would say: 1) Booming economy, 2) People, 3) Outdoors, 4) Nightlife, and 5) Surrounding areas. Come check it out and see for yourself, I’d be happy to help get you oriented.
