La Canada California

Also known as La Canada Flintridge

There are many things to love about living in La Canada, CA. It’s a small neighborly community.  The kick off to Summer is the annual Memorial Day Parade. It seems every child in La Canada is in this parade. There are vintage cars, girl scouts riding on fire engines, dog walkers and a fly over. The main thoroughfares of the town are closed off for this parade.

In the Summer many residents meet up on Sunday evenings for “Music in the Park” at Memorial Park. Imagine Hollywood Bowl on the lawn. People bring chairs, blankets and picnic baskets. Some bring wine, some bring kids and some bring both.

Our local Farmer’s Market is one of the best in Los Angeles. While there isn’t an oversupply of vendors, the ones we have are the best. There is an organic chicken farmer, two French bakers (one with sandwiches). They also sell hummus, sheep’s milk yogurt, organic fruit and vegetables.

The La Canada school district is one of the finest in Los Angeles County. Having put two daughters through the school system I can attest to the benefits. What is especially nice, is that the children hang out with most of the same friends from kindergarten through high school. As a parent it was comforting to have the opportunity to really get to know the other parents and their children.

La Canada has a small commercial district on Foothill Blvd. and a Town Center. We have a variety of restaurants, mostly casual but a few upscale ones such as Taylor’s Steak House. As far as retail there are some nice boutiques but the big retail stores are big box discount stores. It can be challenging to find a nice birthday gift. But in a pinch, neighboring Pasadena and Glendale offer more upscale options.

Overall, La Canada is a lovely community and I am grateful to call it my home.
